Vector Equilibrium

The cuboctahedron, which Buckminster Fuller called the Vector Equilibrium, is an Archimedean solid.

Construction

Vertices are all permutations of (±1, ±1, 0). Eight triangular and six square faces are generated with outward winding.

Mathematical properties

  • ◇12 vertices, 24 edges, 14 faces (V − E + F = 2)
  • ◇Centre-to-vertex distance equals edge length
  • ◇Arises in cubic close packing of spheres

Symbolic interpretation

Fuller treated it as a model of balanced forces; this is a design philosophy rather than physics.
